Now that the first carving session is complete the urethane material that was very blocky previously has been transformed.  The intent of the piece is visible.  This is my favorite stage of the process because the intent becomes apparent and is no longer abstracted by process.  The energy of the carving process is visible in the roughed out form and I’m often tempted to leave the idea in this state but I have other plans for this piece and need a more finished surface.

Now the carving process slows and I focus on the subtle nuances of light and shadow as they fall on the form.  I need to catch the piece out of the corner of my eye as I walk in the studio and do little bits of adjusting.  A little more curve here, a softer line there and walk away.
