Making a miniature automaton – Part II

Assembled prototype with wind-up controller

The controller prototype crankshaft is attached to a small music box movement with the musical comb removed to gain more torque. The linked pennies produce a wave type of motion, which is more natural than the earlier design that used a bent wire shaft. Sankyo makes windup mechanisms with an output shaft which is used to attach the mechanics. The small 18 note Sankyo music box has very little power so in order to have more than one motion a smaller, lighter armature is required. This led to design mechanisms using counterbalancing springs and cables that requires very little power to move the figure.

The finished mechanism is assembled with magnifying glasses and surgical tweezers.
